Around our house the sight of rain clouds and cooler temps got a mixed reaction this morning after a weekend packed with sunshine, road trips, beaches, BBQ and visiting with all kinds of folks.
I’m totally sun burned (my annual mis-interpretation of the sun’s power and overindulgence of Vitamin D, ouch!). So, waking up to a cool breeze and the smell of rain showers forced a sigh of relief.
The tiny person, on the other hand, has been willing the sun to reveal itself ASAP so that our 10 a.m. date with the Empire Days Parade in Cumberland isn’t at risk.
At any level, we are headed to Empire Days festivities this AM – me in a long-sleeved shirt – and soaking up our last day of long weekend fun.
Here’s what’s happening this week:
- Do get out to Empire Days in Cumberland as there is a TON of great family fun on the schedule including Valley Idol finalists, pipe bands, May pole dancing as well as a petting zoo, craft booths, face painting and fair food. Wahoo!
- The Rotary Water Park at the Lewis Centre is now OPEN. The tiny person nearly flipped when we drove by on Saturday and the fountains were on, kids running around in swim suits and good times roaring. The water park is always free. Summer, let’s hope you have arrived.
- CVK’s weekly NeighbourWood Walk is at 1 p.m. out at Miracle Beach this week. If you are registered, we will meet at the MB Nature House. Weather permitting, we’ll wind up with a bit of a play on the beach. If you need a carpool, let me know. Wahoo!
- Women struggling with infertility are invited to attend a workshop on traditional Chinese medicine and reproductive health from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 21) at 2311 Rosewall Crescent in Courtenay. The workshop is FREE and hosted by Dr. Michelle Hughes – a Courtenay doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Registration is needed. So, call 898-7547 for more information.
- Registration for Exploration Art Camp is now on. The first camp – Creative Kids for youth ages 8-12 – is July 14-18. The second – Young Artists for youth ages 12-16 will be July 12 -16. Each runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at North Island College. The cost is $250 for the first program or $275 for the second and kiddos will get to work with a variety of mediums, tools and techniques (sounds so awesome). There are a few bursaries available. You have to apply for those by June 21. Registration is required. So, call Jenja at 218-2776 or Heili at 334-3706 for more information or register at Courtenay Rec.
- The Courtenay Rec Summer Recreation Reporter is now out with Summer program registration in full swing. Call the Lewis Centre at 338-5371 or The Filberg Centre at 338-1000 for more information.
- The Comox Recreation Spotlight on Recreation Guide will be available May 28 with registration for Summer programs starting May 30. There are some amazing programs this year including kayaking, road hockey and the beloved Hands-On Farm. So, make sure to check it out.
- Youth ages 12 to 17 can now sign up for the Comox Valley Volleyball Camp. The Summer camp runs from July 7-10. Call Brian McAskill at 338-6735 for more information.
- You can now get your FREE Emergency Guide to help your family prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies. They are available at Courtenay City Hall, Comox Town Hall and all local fire halls. It’s a great guide with tons of important information. So, be sure to get one.
